Environment = home

It starts with one simple action and eventually, collectively becomes part of the culture. Here in the NW, it's expected: recycling, reusing, composting, supporting sustainable markets, living in a somewhat simpler fashion. Yes there are those who don't live this way but it's sort of considered socially tacky. People like you better here if you care about the earth.

I know other parts of the country aren't quite at that point, but if one can just get a basic understanding of the fact that our actions (big/small, good/bad) influence the health of their own environment, we'd be a few steps ahead...

I totally agree - I don't understand people that say "I'm tired of hearing about XYZ" when it comes to environmental issues. It's one of the few areas left where your actions, no matter how little, have direct impact on things. If you want to stop hearing about us ruining our environment, why don't you do your part to help prevent the man-made causes and convince others to do the same?

Excellent points - every single one of them! Active environmentalism is not a fad or a fashion statement that we should tire of...it's a way of securing a healthy future for ALL living things. I agree, every little step each of us takes toward "green" living is a step in the right direction. We have seen the positive changes that are happening already because people unite with things like their purchasing power. For example, my local natural foods store doesn't even carry plastic bags anymore because collectively their customers were giving them a hard time. And I am seeing reusable shopping bags at more conventional grocery stores too. Some may think this is small in the grand scheme of things, but I say the general conscience is shifting and THAT is huge.
agreed.

This is true. Antipathy or backlash is just so nonsensical.

I would like to see a bit more stepping up to the plate, e.g. all bulbs in the house CF, a permanent change in the thermostat.Carrying reusable (cloth) grocery bags more often thatn not. IMO, the itty bitty stuff is too easy to let slide.
