The clip below is a brief excerpt from a recent issue of NRDC's This Green Life. Click through to read the article for great ideas on celebrating the holiday season while being mindful of the environment. The suggestion to donate to a non-profit in lieu of a gift is my personal favorite. Here are links to three wonderful (and reputable) organizations where you can do just that:

No one wants to give up on the holidays or the sense of abundance that the season bestows. The only question is how to be generous without bankrupting the earth. Here are some thoughts.

Give things people need and can use

Choose gifts made of sustainable materials

Buy locally made products

Look for used things with a provenance

Give things that reduce energy usage

Avoid excessively packaged products

Give tickets

Give a party

Give of yourself

Swap contributions to non-profits

we are giving to charity this year...finally. still have to buy afew things though.

i'm all about giving charitable donations this year instead of "junk". I'm only buying presents for my nephew and other children in the family that are too young to understand yet-- but we are only buying from small businesses or local places!

Well put Red, there are lots of earth-friendly and cool gifts at this site; www.vivaterra.com. The hand carved bamboo and teak ducks are a favorite. made from renewable sources and not highly manufactured....

A friend gave me a goat last year and I wondered if she was trying to tell me something! All of these are great ideas though. I used to buy gifts from a website which sold things made in African and South American villages. They were eventually swallowed up by overstock.com though!
